Character Name: Seamus Zelazny Harper
Series: Andromeda
Age: 32
From When?: The beginning of Series Five, after three years stranded and alone on Seefra. After being pulled forward and backward in time by the Barge, Harper finally gets ditched back into the timestream he came from with no memory of his time as a warden. Just in time for Marika to figure out that Harper's been playing her, and shoots his ass.

Fandom: Andromeda
AU or OU: OU
Canon Point: At the end of series four

Appearance: The most immediately obvious thing about Seamus Harper (setting aside the abrasive personality, that is) is that compared to every single other character in his Canon, he's... well, kind of tiny. He's five foot five, stocky, and has a head full of blonde hair which is permanently spiked up. On his neck, just beneath one ear, he has a Cerebral Port embedded into his neck. This looks like a silver, metallic disk, with an opening in the center of it.

He has a tendency to wear hideous Hawaiian shirts, tribal print tee shirts, and Cargo pants. Fashion is not his friend.

History: A link to a wiki or other outside source is acceptable. If no link is available please provide a brief over view of important events in the character's life.

Previous Game History: If you're apping previous game history please detail it here. Note any major events and changes in the character. You don't have to list all their CR but please mention everyone who played a major role in their life there.

Personality:
It’s impossible to talk about Seamus Harpers personality, without talking about where he comes from.

Earth did not fare well after the Fall of the Commonwealth. The utopian governing force which had held together peace and order in the known universe fell in an intergalactic war three hundred years before Harper was even born. After the war, earth had first been overthrown by a brutal tribe of the genetically enhanced Niezchien race, who enslaved, oppressed, and tortured the inhabitants, before playing host to the numerous invasions of a swarm of parasitic aliens known as the Magog, who swept across the planet consuming and laying their eggs within the inhabitants.

This was the world which Seamus Harper was born into, and while it might not be immediately obvious from his hyperactive and irreverent demeanor, the effects of growing up in a world that demanded the suspension of morality in the name of survival stay with him throughout his life.

A self proclaimed genius, it’s likely that Harper's intelligence was his key to escaping from his home planet, we see in flashbacks that when he first begins working with Beka (his long time captain) he is hired straight off earth by a boyfriend of her's for general grunt work, but it was Harper’s self taught ability with engines which convinced Beka to keep him on. This is likely a key contributor to his nigh megalomaniacal self praise when it comes to his abilities. He may be a short, scrawny, genetically inferior and deeply irritating life form who never gets laid despite his best efforts, but he’s smart. Hell, he’s really smart. He’s so smart that he single handedly thought his way into adulthood on one of the most hostile planets in the universe, then he thought his way off it, he thought his way across the galaxy and thought his way into the engine room of the biggest, baddest warship of the last three hundred years, and he definitely likes to make sure everyone knows about it. His need to constantly emphasize and brag about his intelligence is probably linked to a certain need to overcompensate for his physical weakness and the assumptions that are naturally made about people born on earth.

It is commented during the series that Harper follows the twin muses of Chaos and Caffeine, and it’s true that if you catch him on a good day then it’s likely that the overriding impression you’ll receive will be one of a small hyperactive boy with an incredibly short attention span and a bit of a god complex. He’s just one of those people whose mind moves so fast that it’s impossible for his body or just about anyone else’s to keep up, and while his behaviour and moods might make perfect sense to him, without the good fortune of being able to see the thought processes behind his motivations? The outcomes certainly suggest a chaotic line of thinking.

Harper also shows a hedonistic streak and a serious lack of impulse control. As early as the first episode he’s talking about spending his cut of a big score on going to the sci-fi equivalent of an extremely high class brothel, and throughout every series he proves himself to be flirtatious and lecherous when it comes to members of the fairer sex. He subsists off a constant flow of beer and cola while working, and has occasionally shown his passion for his work and his desire for recognition to override all other considerations of common sense, loyalty, fear, and reason.

Despite mainly coming across as fairly well intentioned, Harper has a definite nasty side to him, his deep seated hatred of Niezchiens and Magog is something he never grows out of, and he expresses several times that he would ultimately be content with the eradication of both races. At one point he even attempts to re-write history by killing potentially hundreds of thousands of Niezchiens before a critically important battle. When confronted by the reality and consequences of his actions, he does show a certain regret for what he’s done, not wanting to talk or think about the damage caused. However in the hours building up to it, the possibility of feeling anything but victorious afterward never seems to even occur to him. He also shows zero respect for the internal workings of the ships AI, Andromeda, despite clearly viewing her as an independent sentient being, he’s perfectly happy to hack into her and play with, block, unleash, and re-write her memory bank and internal workings. This happens multiple times across the series and while she is always deeply offended by it and he is always apologetic? That never seems to stop him from doing it again the next time.

Over the first four series Harper does grow more noble in some ways, more hesitant to immediately seek vengeance for various slights, and more prone towards self sacrifice than he is in early series, however, by the beginning of series five this has all been undone. In the conclusion of the last episode of series four, the crew are scattered across a technologically backwards planet in a distant galaxy, and while most of them are only there for a few weeks or months before Dylan begins to reunite them, due to a temporal flux, Harper is stranded there for three years there before anyone else arrives. By the time Dylan finds him he’s been trying to re-build Andromeda’s consciousness and memories for years, with little success. He’s working on growing the perfect species for an evil geneticist who’s lacking in any real talent, and mainly achieving deformed and unintelligent mutations in his attempts. He does however seem to view them with the a deep rooted affection, and is happy to endanger the remainder of the galaxy to try and protect them. At this point Harper appears to have regressed to the same kind of morality which he lived by on earth, in which he protects himself and his family and doesn’t care about anything else. When one of his former crewmates suggests that because he was stranded alone he started stealing, Harper responds that he started stealing when he was five, so that was nothing new, apparently supporting this theory.

In terms of interpersonal relations, Harper manages to connect with a broad variety of people despite his obnoxious and annoying tendencies. Arguably his closest friend in the series, and probably the one whom he shows the most respect for is Beka Valentine, who captains the ship he served on since his escape from Earth. Despite his lecherous tendencies, Harper clearly has no problem with serving under a female commander, and indeed seems to be more inclined towards doing what she tells him too than doing what his latter Captain, Dylan Hunt tells him. Probably the most meaningful relationship we see Harper in over the course of the series, is the one he has with the ship itself, while his true motives for how he feels towards Andromeda are never fully explored, he says several times across the series that he loves her or is in love with her, although the exact degree to which Andromeda returns the feelings beyond a platonic level is unclear, as either way it’s clearly impossible for her to return his affections, it is likely something she’s never had cause to entertain. On Harpers part the feelings seem to be largely rooted in his role as “her” engineer, and a level of intimacy that comes from devoting himself so intently towards keeping her running. Although there was also an obvious and immediate attraction to the ship before he was officially her engineer, and as has been already mentioned, he’s quite verbal about his attraction to the women he comes across, so it seems unlikely that he’s incapable of falling in love with women who aren’t star ships.

Harpers relationships with men tend to be more antagonistic than the ones he has with women (There’s considerably less flirting, although throw away lines like describing Dylan as: “A greek god” still sneak in? Harper is more verbal about how taken he is with women.), although this could in part be due to the fact that three out of the four relationships with men that we see Harper develop across the course of the series are with Magog and Nietzchiens. Harper develops a close friendship with Nietzchien Tyr Anasazi over the first three series of Andromeda, and while in the forefront of his mind, Harper never actually confesses to liking or trusting Tyr, he shows an increasing amount of affection for the other man, going so far as to hug him tightly when he and Beka return from several weeks lost in space. When Try eventually does betray them, and Harper gets a chance to speak to him again, he asks Tyr what he’d ever done to him to deserve the betrayal, making it clear that he wasn’t prepared to shrug the act off as just being the rational thing to do, or an act against the crew at large, not only was it personal? But it was also clearly about him.

Powers/Abilities: List any major powers or abilities. Their limits and weaknesses.

Possessions: What are they bringing with them? Keep in mind they can only bring in what was in their possession at the moment they where taken.

Arrival: Harper will wake up on the ship!

Reason for Playing: Harper is one of my all time favorite characters, and while I've played him extensively in the past, but I'm really excited about the prospect of putting him into an old school sci-fi game. He's a character who was born and raised in a crapsack universe, and I think he'd be pretty much perfectly suited to the setting.

First person: Six or seven sentences. This is to give us an idea of how they sound. You may also link an existing thread that is at least eight comments long. It must be of the version of the character you intend to play in the game.

Third person: (200 words) This can be anything you like. Their life back home. Their reaction to the game's world. Something that gives us an idea of how they act. You can link an existing thread but it must be the version of the character you intend to play.

I know this is a post that's been done to death over the last twenty four hours, and I wasn't gonna add to the white noise or anything, but...

...but what the hell, right? Trance? Beka? Rommie? If any of you guys are getting this, then let me know, okay? It's be real good to hear from any of you guys.
deusexmechanic: (know it all)
[Harper switches on the video feed, and he's kinda got that twitchy, 'I'm furious, but I'm reigning it in' look about him. He smiles, and claps his hands together.]

So hey! Who's mad at right now? Everyone, yeah? I mean, I'm talking myself included here, because hey, getting controlled into hurting your friends and destroying the things you love? Yeah, that freakin' bites, especially when the guy who does it to you is someone you like, someone you trust, even. So believe me...

[He gives the Barge a pretty serious, direct look now.]

...I get it.

I could not get it more. And I get why people are out to hurt him now, and I get how hard it must be not to act on the desire to take revenge, when you know that the only downside to it is that you'll get a week in Zero and a disappointed shake of your warden's head.

[And then he brightens up once again, and now it's a little bit manic.]

So I figure, I'm gonna make it a whole lot easier. For anyone who's not feeling a whole lot better since seeing that lovely broadcast? Or for anyone who got any ideas from it? I'm gonna make this clear, just to dissuade any monkey see monkey do crap:

From now on? Anyone who deliberately hurts my inmate for any reason? I will personally track down and kill. Painfully.

See, I don't really get involved in how the wardens mete out punishment on each other for crap like this, but so far? I've not seen any of them get worse than a week in zero either. So I figure, I'm giving you all advance warning, right? You know the consequences now, and if your wardens have a problem with it? Well, then they can throw me in zero after I've pounded two energy blasts into your face.

Try not to think of this as a vendetta, or as vigilantism. Think of it as the death penalty distributed a la Seamus Harper.

[Piece said, Harper reaches forward, and flicks off the video.]

Admiral, take all the tech out of Rex's room, any personal projects, gone. Gimmie copies of the notes from whatever he's working on.

Take away his access to privacy filters on his journal, and... stick his snakes and his mice in my room. For now.

[Pause pause pause.]

[Filtered away from Rex]

If anyone needs me I'll be in my cabin or in the engine room. Anyone has a problem with my inmate outside of the obvious right now, then you can bring it to me there.

[Okay, so... Harper was completely unsurprised to be paired with Rex. WHO KNOWS WHY? It just felt obvious to him that that was what was going to happen. What does give him pause is... well, reading Rex's file. In particular, what he did to Ana and the super soldiers. And now he's looking at the posts of the last week or so, and kinda frowning.]

So... hey, I was just wondering, not commenting, not complaining, not judging, just wondering: All the arguing you guys have been doing, I know a lot of people are kind of bitching about how typical it all is and how you're always like this, but I was just wondering...

Is it always like this? Or, ah, does anyone think that their friends and neighbors have been acting just a liiiiittle heebie-jeebie lately?

[There's a bit of rustling in the background, as Harper continues to read Rex's file. Then after a moment, then switches to private.]

[Private to Rex]

Hey, so I guess it turns out your reassignment was just a placeholder. Now that we're back in the game, how about we get together and make some happy new memories?

[AKA: How about he quizzes you about your nanomites :|]
deusexmechanic: (BRB WORKING)
I was raised on the nastiest backwater refugee camp Earth has to offer, my parents were both killed by Nietzchiean slavers when I was a kid, and I only made it offworld alive but for the grace of the gorgeous Beka Valentine's boyfriend being a deadbeat jerk.

I like engines better than I like people, I'm doing this whole 'save the universe' bit with Captain Fantastic back in the real world, but much as I like it I sure as hell don't buy into it, and I'll be the first to admit I've probably done worse crap than some of the inmates here.

I don't know why this place brought me back with no memories, I don't know what happened to me before I came here last time, and I'll be perfectly honest, some of the stuff I said in my old entries? Some of the stuff I said to Tyr? Makes me not want to remember. Some of the stuff that I said to the rest of you makes me wish that I did.

So here's the mantra for those of us struck by the urge to get all desperate confessional, repeat after me:

"The universe hates me, and I don't get a say in what it hits me with."

No kidding, you can't fight that, all you get to decide is how you run your damage control programs, and for all the stupid crap I've done wrong in my life, guess what? This place couldn't dredge a single thing out of me that I'm ashamed of.
deusexmechanic: (grin/gun)
[Video clicks on, and there's Harper! He's kicked back in a big, sci-fi seat and reading off a thin sheet of what looks like acetate paper, he jabs a finger at the sheet, there's a computery bleeping blooping sound, and the black print on the page shifts and rearranges. Harper straightens up, clears his throat, and reads from the sheet:]

Attention all ladies, gentlemen, intersexed, genderless and hermaphroditic life forms of the boundless universes. [He glances up from the sheet and plants a hand on his heart, shooting the camera a smile.] Allow me to introduce myself: Seamus Zelazny Harper. First Engineer of the Andromeda Ascendant under Captain Dylan Hunt, and official diplomatic ambassador of the New Systems Commonwealth.

[Harper clears his throat slightly, then adds under his breath:]

For now.

[For those who know him... Harper actually looks pretty good. He looks about five years younger than he did when he left. For those who don't know him, he's a tiny little man with spiky blond hair wearing a Hawaiian shirt, and looks absolutely nothing like a diplomatic ambassador should look. Around his neck, there's what futuristic Doctors (and Tyr) might recognize as an inhalator. Introduction given, he tosses the sheet over his shoulder, and leans forward to the camera, inquisitively.]

Hey, so, I don't suppose anyone here represents a nation state, or a planet, or... I don't know, a secret club? We're not a very picky Commonwealth, but we have some real bitchin' firepower behind us.
deusexmechanic: (Worried)
Hey I just wanted to give you guys a heads up, apparently there's something super crucial crawling out of the rocks back in the backwater of the universe.

[Pause, and... yeah, okay, there might be a tiny bit of hopefulness in his voice.]

No word on what it is yet, but... If this means that Beka--

[Another pause.]

Okay, I don't know how much I ever told you guys, about where I was before I came here. I know I've talked about the Andromeda before, but... three years ago... we lost the ship. We were divided and overrun. Eventually, they got to me, and by the time I did, I was the only one left. Everyone else was already... they were already gone.

Then there was this light, this blinding light, and the next thing I knew? I was somewhere else. This stinkin' backwards rock of a planet with nothing going for it but warlords and dirt. No technology, no law, and the only things I cared about there just kept getting torn apart. I was there for three years before the Admiral offered me a deal, and... I didn't spend those three years fighting to save the universe, I didn't spend 'em trying to survive by keeping my hands clean. I just shut down my conscience and forgot about all the crap we were trying to do before.

I didn't come here to help anybody, I didn't wanna save anybodies soul, I just wanted off Seefra, and I didn't think there was anything here that was gonna change that.

[Pause]

I don't know when it happened, but I was wrong. Something here changed it. If I'm getting called back, because there's even a chance that my Captain's alive? That she needs me, back on Seefra? I can't not take that chance anymore. So I have to go. If... something happens? If I die? The guy upstairs brings me back here. If not, I'll come back as soon as I can.

[Pause]

Rex, You think you could keep an eye on the mongoose while I'm away?
deusexmechanic: (Prowling the ship)

Bring Rex back into the infirmary. Lock his cabin and move his snakes to my room until-- until we've got his cleaned up.

[Harper's slumped back on his bed, dangling a piece of string down for his mongoose to chase around his sheets. He looks kinda calmer than usual, maybe a bit more subdued.]

Sometimes it seems like one step forward two steps back in this place. Kinda weird how... uh, how-- [No, mongoose, bite the string! Not the engineers hand! Harper makes a brief escape, then goes back to dangling.] I mean, anyone ever notice how sometimes the shittiest days come and go the quietest?

[He pauses for a minute, then scoops the mongoose up in one hand, and drops the other down to stroke across it's back affectionately.]

So how's everybody doing? Let's all here it for the people who aren't vanishing, comatose, or struggling with the silent ache of loss and heartbreak!

[And he shoots you all a wry little grin, as if to say: Like me.]

[Private to Rex]

Hey, I'm coming over to see you, so brace yourself for my immanent arrival.

[ooc: Sorry Barge, IT'S BEDTIME! Tags will be got at tomorrow!]
deusexmechanic: (BRB WORKING)
[Harper dropped back on his bed, letting out a long breath. He'd re-tuned a couple of personal projects, worked for a couple of hours on Rommie, and accidentally unleashed his mongoose only to spend half an hour tracking it back down again. Now? He could feel his body trying to wind down, trying to force him to rest even though his mind just wouldn't.

He closed his eyes, and started mentally calculating the fuel capacity of huge infinite space.]

deusexmechanic: (Prowling the ship)
[Audio clicks on, Harper sounds haggard and exhausted and not particularly lucid and massively pissy.]

Hey Claire? Fuck you!

[Audio clicks off again.]

[ooc: Rex told him about this conversation while Harper was at his most charming and capable of constructing a complaint, so obviously his objections manifest maturely. He'll probably be passing out shortly after posting this :c]
deusexmechanic: (bloodied)
[Around lunchtime, you get yet another post from Harper in the engine room. Only this time it is pretty distinctively unsexy. Video clicks on, and he's kind of half slumped against one of the metal panels of the engine room looking a total wreck he's pale, damp with sweat, and his eyes are bloodshot. It actually takes him a moment to register that he's got the journal on, but once he works this out, he focuses his eyes on it.]

Hey-- I was... I was feeling kinda-- not so good earlier, so I was gonna just take tomorrow to sleep it off or something. Only, it just got way worse, way too fast, and now I'm kind of afraid that if it keeps on then I might be dying, and--

[He closes his eyes, and takes a deep breath before exhaling it with a shudder, then drops his head against the metal panel, not bothering to open his eyes again.]

I didn't mean to say all that. I just... I think I'm dying, and I think I need help.

[OOC: SO, Harper got spiked with an experimental truth serum by Hayley and Crane. GOOD NEWS? It worked, he can't lie right now. BAD NEWS? It was mildly toxic, and Harpers immune system is a straw house built on a foundation of malnutrition. He isn't dying, but he sure as hell feels like he is right now. Engine dudes? You can assume that Harper went from being perfectly fine (if a bit overly chatty) to being a sweating, feverish mess within the space of about an hour and a half.

P.s. No more Harper spam after this, promise :c]

[Audio clicks on, and you are greeted with the loving sound of Seamus Harper, clearly half way through explaining something. He sounds slightly out of breath, whatever he’s been doing sounds kinda tiring.]

Okay, and don't worry too much about technique now, just push.

[Another voice responds... a voice that sounds suspiciously like Robert Capa...]

This...isn't going to work. It's too hard... here, you switch with me and we can try that way.

And there was a post THICK WITH INNUENDO, so it was put behind a cut c: )

[OOC: THEY ARE NOT HAVING SEX. They're trying to force a coolant injection system into one of the vents in the engine room, Capa is new to this whole 'physical working on engines' thing, Harper is welcoming him to the fun world of hard work, and accidentally spilling oil over both of them.

also we just needed some hideous crack after all the srs bznss]
deusexmechanic: (bump on the head)
[Harper's voice clicks on over the network, he sounds tired and irritable.]

Jeeze, there must be something about having everybody at everybody else's throat that gets a guy down after a while. Does anyone have like... a good remedy for insomnia? Or like, something to make your sleep a little--

[He trails off, because he doesn't wanna say 'calmer', exactly.]

...I don't know, like, meditation or something? Herbal teas?

[Restless sigh]

Yeah, yeah, wishful thinking, right? Forget it. I'll be in the Engine Room if anybody needs me.

Hey, I'm talking to Infirmary lady, Edgar's warden, and Crane's warden, right?

Okay, Persephone, I recently discovered that your inmate had a list of chemicals he was trying to get hold of, apparently in order to make some kind of 'synthetic blood' for him to drink. According to him, Crane was going to help him with this.

I've had a little experience in stuff like this, and I'm just saying, a couple of these chemicals? You really don't want inmates getting their hands on. Here this is what he's looking for:

[MAGICAL LIST.]

I can tell you for certain that these don't make synthetic blood, and my first guess would be that they're to let Crane make fear gas. I'm also going to guess that you can get some of them from the infirmary, so I'd like to suggest that first you check your stocks, and second that he gets assigned to a different job.

I'm just saying, he clearly didn't go to any warden with this list, so presumably he knew that the chemicals he needed would have to be stolen. He shouldn't be in a position where he can do that, and even if he didn't know what the ingredients were for, a guy that easy to manipulate, shouldn't be in a position where other peoples safety is in his hands.
